LIN 235 - Signed Languages & Deaf Communities This course will allow students to explore American Sign Language and signed languages through an interdisciplinary lens. The course examines: signed languages’ histories and linguistic structure; how Deaf Communities emerge (and the socio-cultural-educational dynamics of their formation–or not); what a “Deaf Identity” means in the context of disability and cultural identity; and discusses issues of linguistic and clinical relevance such as language deprivation and exposure diversity, language innovation, language intervention, and sign language disorders.
