AAS 577 - Language, Culture, and Social Change
This course examines the role of language in shaping culture and society. It explores language’s daily functions and its broader impact on identity, social relations, and social changes. The course adopts linguistic anthropological approaches to show how language reflects and creates thought, culture, identity, and power dynamics. We will also explore together how to apply these concepts to your own everyday experiences with language. The curriculum includes key linguistic anthropological and sociolinguistic concepts, such as culture, community, identity, power, and ideology. By the end of the course, students will understand the complex relationship between language and societal structures and the way language helps shape our social world.
