A non-matriculated / visiting undergraduate is a student who is taking a course at Stony Book, but not pursuing a Stony Brook University degree. To take a course during one of our intersessions, visit the Office of the Registrar’s summer session or winter session websites to apply.
Typically, students are not permitted to take courses as a non-matriculated / visiting student during the fall or spring semesters, unless permission from both Undergraduate Admissions and the academic department of the course they wish to take is granted. Note that courses in the College of Engineering and Applied Science may not be taken as a non-matriculated/visiting student. In addition, STEM disciplines are prioritized to current students and are extremely limited.
A total of 24 credits may be taken as a non-matriculated/visiting student, with a maximum of 9 credits during each of the fall and spring semesters. If you are interested in taking a course during the fall or spring semester, contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at enroll@stonybrook.edu Visit the Office of Admissions non-matriculated/visiting student website for more information about applying.
Those previously enrolled at Stony Brook in an undergraduate degree program must contact the Office of the Registrar and follow procedures for rematriculation.
Those who have already earned a bachelor’s degree and are interested in enrolling as a non-matriculated/visiting student, regardless of the level of study, should contact the Graduate School.
Non-matriculated/visiting students are not eligible for most types of financial aid. Students from other institutions who plan to study at Stony Brook as a non-matriculated/visiting student should see a financial aid counselor at your home institution about the possibility of continuing to receive financial aid. All non-matriculated/visiting students must fulfill health requirements set forth by Student Health Services.
Those students who are permitted to enroll on a non-matriculated status cannot graduate from the university in this status. Courses and grades earned may be applied toward a degree program at Stony Brook and used to fulfill the university’s residence requirement.
Non-matriculated students’ academic performance is reviewed at the conclusion of each semester by the Office of the Registrar. Students who earn less than a 2.0 cumulative grade point average at the completion of each semester are not permitted to continue. Upon completion of 24 credits as a non-matriculated/visiting student, students who wish to continue their undergraduate studies as a degree-seeking student, should contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
