HPD 519 - Sytematic Review of the Literature This course trains students in a variety of evidence synthesis methodologies, with the goal of preparing students to comprehensively review the scholarly literature, as a foundation for competently performing population health and clinical outcomes research. In this course, students will learn how to: develop a focused research question and identify which evidence synthesis methodology (e.g., systematic review, scoping review, and narrative review) is most appropriate to answer a given question; comprehensively search and map the literature; screen and select studies based on appropriate inclusion and exclusion criteria; critically appraise the validity of research studies; extract relevant data from included studies; perform meta-analysis and related analytic approaches to pooling data from research studies (e.g., meta-regression, subgroup analysis, cumulative meta-analysis, funnel plots, and sensitivity analysis) and other forms of data synthesis (e.g., evidence gap mapping, tabular and graphical syntheses); and assess confidence in the synthesized results of evidence synthesis products. This course also prepares doctoral students to successfully complete their qualifying exam, which consists of producing a systematic review of publishable quality that informs their dissertation research study.
