HPH 537 - Introduction to Climate Solutions and Health What are the public health implications of climate change? Which populations are most vulnerable? How can public health professionals intervene to prevent or reduce harm? In this course, we will explore the significant health impacts of climate change and develop the skills necessary to understand climate forecasts, estimate health risks, identify at-risk populations, and design interventions to help communities adapt. Climate change will affect various groups, including outdoor workers, the home-bound, children, and the elderly, across both high-income and low- to middle-income countries.
We will study these health challenges from the perspectives of diverse stakeholders and emphasize a multidisciplinary approach to addressing climate-related health issues. An effective public health response to climate change requires cross-disciplinary skills, including the ability to critically assess scientific data, identify vulnerable populations, engage with stakeholders, and collaborate across fields to promote health in a shifting environment. A key component of this course is a project focused on climate vulnerability and mitigation, conducted in partnership with a local government or non-governmental organization.
