HWC 612 - Social Science Theory for Social Welfare In this course, we explore the nature of social theory and the normative project of social welfare by examining theories of social justice, human rights and oppression. We consider the nature and structure of power, the role of ideology and their impact in a society defined by inequality. Social Construction and critical theory are particularly relevant as their assumptions align well with those of social welfare. Lastly, we explore the tensions and possibilities of democratic theories and ideals, given the current context, as a means to further social welfares normative project. Throughout the course, students are challenged to explore existing theory and, importantly, to learn and engage in the process of theorizing, themselves.
