AAS 539 - Korean Literature This course is an introduction to the literary tradition of Korea. It examines representative literary works from various periods of Korean literature, paying special attention to their historical background and the aesthetic and cultural values embedded within them. Structured in three parts, premodern literature, modern transformation, and contemporary innovation. The course traces the development of Korean literature from ancient myths and classical verses to postwar fiction and contemporary narratives. Students will engage with both primary texts and secondary scholarship to deepen their understanding of Korean literary history and its ongoing relevance. Graduate students are expected to complete all assigned readings, lead discussions, and develop a final research paper that demonstrates original critical insight.
