Write Effectively in English (WRT)

Writing is the most effective way we have to find out what we think. It also requires us to think about others as we try to determine the best way to convey our ideas effectively. Through revision of our writing we learn to weigh hundreds of considerations to decide on which matter most in enabling us to communicate most effectively. Our global environment is more information-rich than ever before, but so is the possibility that we can be misled by misinformation. For that reason, and because acquiring information in any discipline only has community value when it can be communicated, we believe Stony Brook students should become proficient in written communication.

Students must begin satisfaction of the writing requirement in their first year at Stony Brook and must take writing courses in continuous sequence: WAE 190  / WAE 192  / WAE 194  / WRT 101  / WRT 102 .

The Stony Brook Curriculum requires the equivalent of two semesters of introductory college-level English composition to acquire and practice these skills.  Students must complete this requirement by completing the equivalent of WRT 101  and WRT 102 .  Completion of the requirement culminates in the completion of WRT 102 with a letter grade of C or higher.

The following official scores would serve to place a student directly into WRT 102:

SAT EBRW score equal to or greater than 580
ACT ELA score equal to or greater than 23
AP English Language and Composition score of 3 or greater
AP English Literature and Composition score of 3 or greater

A student who does not have one of the above scores would need to complete a Writing Placement Exam (WPE), which will be evaluated to determine the appropriate course placement.

Notes:

1. Students may transfer credits to satisfy the D.E.C. category A or SBC category WRT only with approved courses completed prior to matriculation at Stony Brook.  Coursework taken at institutions other than Stony Brook after matriculation will not apply to the DEC A or SBC WRT requirement, or advance the writing sequence.
